    Sustainability

    Living Green

At Clayton Hotels we are personally committed to significantly improving our processes and practices to reduce any harmful impacts we are having on the environment. Living Green is Clayton Hotels’ environmental movement which inspires care for our environment as a “Way of Life” throughout our hotels; both for our people and our guests.

    Green Tourism

All our hotels have been accredited by Green Tourism, a certification program that provides a framework to achieve a sustainable business in the tourism industry. 80% of our hotels have achieved a Gold certificate and we’re working hard to get all the way there.

    Green Initiatives

    • All our electricity in all our hotels is purchased from 100% renewable sources.
    • We have introduced a new suite of reports that are circulated to all our hotels on a monthly basis which in turn guide them on how they can better reduce their consumption of electricity, gas and water.
    • We have undertaken a significant re-lamping project across the public areas of all our hotels with over 35,000 bulbs changed to LED – we are working towards replacing all light bulbs across our hotels to LED.
    • We have a range of CHP’s in operation across our hotels with an additional 3 units recently installed. A Combined Heat and Power unit (CHP) is an energy efficient technology that generates electricity and captures the heat that otherwise would be wasted to provide thermal energy. Hot water generated from the CHP replaces the need for boilers to be operating at the same time.
    • We are currently in the process of reviewing the effectiveness of our hotel BMS (Building Management Systems) so we can upgrade and replace as appropriate for maximum efficiencies.
    • Most of our hotels have installed tap and shower aerators. These devices control the flow of water without affecting pressure, resulting in significant reductions in the amount of water used. With the aerator in place there is an average saving of 5 litres of running water per minute from taps & also showers. We are working towards installing aerators on all taps & showers across our hotels.

We are committed to tracking all waste generation, focusing on renewable destinations and zero-to-landfill. In 2022, we achieved our target to divert 100% of waste from landfill. We have also engaged with waste processing suppliers that give us the facility to accurately report the volume of food waste across our portfolio and we remain committed to reducing food waste by 15% per sleeper by 2026.

Some notable waste management projects include:

    • Moving away from single use plastics and plastic backed drinks coasters, also continuing to reduce the use of plastic in packaging and packaging waste in general
    • Marketing merchandise has been replaced with more sustainable alternatives
    • All takeaway coffee cups and lids are 100% recyclable, and we introduced a “keep cup” to our Red Bean Roastery Coffee Shop outlets
    • We are actively engaged with “Too Good To Go” at 20+ locations across the company facilitating the transfer of surplus unsold food to their user base
    • All food waste is converted to a fertiliser digestate using an anaerobic digestion process

The average age of our hotel buildings is 15 years across Dalata Hotel Group – young by comparison to many of our counterparts and more energy efficient as a result.

We operate a very comprehensive capital investment programme which ensures we continually look to maintain and up-grade our hotels to the highest standards. As we continue to expand our portfolio, our overall performance in this area will continue to improve as we benefit from new building technologies and efficiencies.

As part of the new build process, we issue a set of ‘Employer Requirements’ to the developer/builder. In these requirements, we outline that a standard of BREAM ‘very good’ is to be achieved. BREEAM is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for master planning projects, infrastructure and buildings.

We exclusively work with Patrick McCaul (Environmental Consulting Engineers) to make sure all hotels are designed, constructed and function as per our brand specific design.

    The Future
